ABOUT OUR HISTORY

Port Deposit, Maryland, is a designated historic district on the Susquehanna River. The town is active in preserving the area’s culture and long history dating back to the early 1800s.

The Carriage House is the sole surviving structure built for Jacob Tome’s personal use on Port Deposit’s Main Street. Tome, Cecil County’s first millionaire and the founder of the Jacob Tome Institute, built the Victorian “Carpenter Gothic” house in 1850 as the carriage house adjacent to his mansion. The Carriage House no longer has horse stalls; however, the Stable Courtyard behind the building is still in existence (and makes a great setting for outdoor events!).
